Belvoir Castle has announced the Castle has now closed.

However, the final weekend of Christmas markets, running from this Friday until Sunday, is still going ahead.

In a statement posted on social media, Belvoir Castle said the decision was made "following advice from local authorities."

No further detail was given but one comment underneath said a parent had reported the castle to the police and the local council claiming it was 'too busy.'

However, Catherine Sewell said: "We did the Santa visit on Sunday and it was very well organised. One way, one family in one out, and a socially distanced meet and greet with the man himself🻠Such a shame that the local authorities didn't feel the risk was mitigated."

The castle statement continued: "Our Gardens and alternative outside Grotto may be able to open from Friday 18th – 23rd December, updates will be announced as soon as possible to facilitate any existing bookings and compensation for the inconvenience.

"Our Engine Yard Christmas Markets will be going ahead as planned Friday 18th - Sunday 20th for ticket holders. Our Engine Yard Shops remain open to all local customers and The Fuel Tank Cafe remains open for takeaway."

The castle statement added: "Thank you for your patience at this unprecedented time.

"If you would like to arrange a refund in advance, please contact [email protected] with your order number."

As Nub News recently reported, Belvoir Castle has recruited Covid Marshalls to help ensure safety at the Scandinavian-style market, which promised 25 wooden shopping chalets sitting alongside the regular Engine Yard artisan shops and retailers.
