Controversy over Grantham CAMRA guide pub listings

The 2021 CAMRA Good Beer Guide has now become available and features ten pubs from the Grantham CAMRA area.

But the listings are not without controversy.

The pubs featured in the guide are as follows:

Nobody Inn, Grantham

The Green Man, Ropsley

Chequers, Grantham

The Castle Inn, Castle Bytham

Grantham Railway Club

The Five Bells Inn, Claypole

The Red Lion At Newton

The Lord Harrowby, Grantham

Fox & Hounds, Castle Bytham

The White Swan, Barrowby

However, the omission of the popular Beerheadz in Watergate, which as Nub News reported earlier, re-opens this afternoon at 4pm, has attracted some criticism.

Grantham CAMRA commented on Facebook: "Whilst we understand there are many amazing pubs in our area that serve a good beer we just cannot get them all in!

"We use a fair system to all the pubs and landlords over each year to score the pubs and the top 10 go through so long as they meet the criteria met.

"The 10 pubs listed above have done well to not only make the guide but continue to trade in these difficult times!"

But Grantham CAMRA member Alana Simpson responded: "Beerheadz is the only bar in the area that consistently supports small independent breweries, throughout their range from Lager styles to Stouts.

"You will find no down market products from the bland big breweries on their menu. Their omission from the GBG is a travesty."

Sue Hayword commented: "Bizarre that BeerHeadZ Grantham is not in.... Far better in a lot of respects than others that did get in.

"Not least as Alana says - the support for small independent breweries is superb. Great beer range and really well looked after. I fail to see how they could not be in...."

However, Grantham CAMRA confirmed: "As a branch usually over the course of a year the members go out every quarter survey all of our pubs, rotating around every 3 months to a different quarter scoring each bar on the quality and choice of its real ale, the quality of service and venue.

"These scores are collated at the end of the year and the bars that have scored the highest over the entire 12 months are put forwards. This way it is a just and fair scoring system for all of our bars.

"Unfortunately BeerHeadZ wasn't in the top 10 last year and therefore didn't make it in. There was a lot of shocked reactions to it not making it through but the system is robust and fair."
