Campaigner welcomes new healthcare campus proposals but calls for more details

Grantham Hospital campaigner Jody Clark has welcomed proposals for a new healthcare campus on the site of the Prince William of Gloucester Barracks.

But Jody, who spearheads Fighting 4 Grantham Hospital, says that the Lincolnshire Sustainability and Transformation Partnership (STP) responses to questions posed by Grantham Nub News and published yesterday (23 May) are too vague.

"The proposals look promising on the Prince William of Gloucester Barracks development. We would just like more assurances on what they plan to build there.

"The report says that 'the local NHS aspires to deliver a Health and Care Campus, bringing together existing local services onto one site'.

"While it's encouraging to hear that all services would be transferred to the campus, it would be good to know that the new facility will provide the services we have now and what we may need as our population increases.

"There is lot of detail in the plans - even down to the work force - but Lincolnshire STP has not provided information about the proposed service provision.

"It leaves the proposals open to much greater scrutiny as the community is cynical of health changes considering all we have lost over the last 20 years.

"We continue to fight to save our A&E, it may take much longer than anyone anticipated, but we must make sure this new Health and Social Care Campus includes all the facilities our community needs.

"I will be keeping a close eye on developments," Jody, who lives in Ropsley with her husband and two autistic sons, told Grantham Nub News.

Yesterday, we reported that Grantham Hospital could close if proposals for a new healthcare campus on the barracks site come to fruition.

South Kesteven District Council (SKDC) is looking to create a garden village-style development on the site, being released by the Ministry of Defence (MOD) from next year to meet Government housing targets.

Included in this redevelopment are details of a new Health and Care Campus 'bringing together existing local services onto one site' and potentially employing 1,100 staff.

We asked Lincolnshire Sustainability and Transformation Partnership (STP) direct questions about the proposals for the Somerby Hill barracks site and what effect this would have on the existing Grantham Hospital should they progress.

In summary Lincolnshire STP:

  • confirmed 'opportunities' at the site are being considered
  • declined to give details of the proposed facility - despite highly detailed information being submitted to the Government
  • did not rule out Grantham Hospital closing if the barracks proposal progressed
  • declined to say, if Grantham Hospital did close, what healthcare services would be provided at the new facility
The site redevelopment proposal is subject to South Kesteven District Council members adopting the Local Plan 2011-2036 and determination of planning application/s for the site.
