Algae warnings for popular beauty spot near Grantham
Warnings have been issued after the discovery of harmful blue-green algae at a popular beauty spot near Grantham.
Signs have been erected by the side of Denton reservoir, which is frequented by dog-walkers, children, fishermen and other visitors.
The algae blooms have been reported on websites, which detail algae blooms across the country.
Such blooms can be very harmful to children and animals.
One Denton resident told Nub News they are an annual occurrence at the reservoir.
The Canal and River Trust, which is responsible for the reservoir, confirmed blue-green algae is at the reservoir, saying the problem is not uncommon in the summer, but people do need to be careful.
Richard Bennett, heritage & environment manager for the Canal & River Trust, said: "Denton Reservoir is a beautiful spot and we want people to continue to enjoy the lovely waterside setting, but just be aware that there's a current outbreak of blue-green algae in the water.
"Blue-green algae is naturally occurring but it can be harmful to your skin so we're asking people to be extra careful. If they or their pets come into contact with the affected water, they should wash all exposed skin with clean water as soon as possible, and especially before eating or drinking. If they are in any doubt about their welfare after contact with algae, they should seek medical advice."
