A Full English for a Fiver?

By The Editor 3rd Aug 2020

It's before 9am and after an early start to work, the challenge was to find breakfast in Grantham- and would it only now cost a fiver?

Today is the day when the Chancellor's Eat Out to Help Out scheme started, offering half-price food and soft drink on Mondays, Tuesday, and Wednesday's during August, to a maximum discount of £10.

As reported by Nub News, you can also check which venues are taking part.

So I set off an parked in wide Westgate, but do watch where in Grantham you park now. The council-owned car parks began charging at the weekend and the traffic wardens have also returned.

The generous two hours parking allowed seemed more than sufficient, though.

I walked past Kitchen and Coffee but at 9am, it was still too early. Cafe Leo, nearby, has yet to re-open, but a sign in the window says it will for take-out from tomorrow.

I passed other cafes that do not open on Mondays, but it might be worth checking. Some pubs like the Geese and Fountain at Croxton Kerrial and the Green Man at Ropsley have opened specially on a Monday for the promotion.

It was just turned 9am and sadly, still too early for the Teaspoon Tea Company and Finkins. As a busy and impatient chap, I sough instant gratification at the Cinco Lounge, overlooking St Peter's Hill.

Inside, I enjoyed a big breakfast, large fresh orange and a flat white served efficiently by friendly and young staff. The bill came to just £8.47.

There were only a few diners in and I felt totally safe. Even a porker like me could not eat it all. I left feeling well satisfied, vowing to return before the end of the month.

There will be 13 days when Eat Out to Help Out operates, so despite wanting to eat my way around Grantham and nearby villages this month, there may well be places I can return to.

And Grantham being Grantham, you will have more choice for brunch, lunch or dinner, as opposed to breakfast.

I left the Cinco Lounge just before 10am and the place was getting busier, but Costa nearby was quiet and I would have expected Wetherspoon's to have more people in.

I headed back to the car, passed Kitchen and Coffee again, where people were now sat outside enjoying the warm sun.

I headed home and back to work where I still feel too full for lunch. There remains only one question: where shall I get my half-price feed tonight?
