A senior Grantham councillor says it is too soon to speculate what caused a fatal accident on the A607 north of Grantham over the Easter Holidays.

As Nub News recently reported, Lincolnshire Police have launched an appeal for witnesses to the tragedy near the Belton Garden Centre.

Around 12-noon on Easter Sunday, police were called to the scene where are motorcycle and a silver Toyota Corolla had collided. Sadly, the motorcyclist, aged in his 50s and from Derbyshire, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident, one of several to have happened in the area in recent years, have prompted calls for a 30mph speed limit along that section of the A607.

Related concerns over road safety there also led parish councillors to try and block a planning application at the Belton Garden Centre, as also reported by Nub News.

However, district and county councillor Ray Wootten (Con- Grantham North) explained: "Until the Police complete their investigations which is then passed to the Coroner it is to early to speculate on the cause of this tragic accident.

"The current speed limit has been reduced in recent times from 60 mph to 50 mph along with random sighting of the speed camera enforcement vehicles.

"The A607 at the village of Manthorpe has also seen a reduction in the speed limit from 40 mph to 30mph."

Coun Wootten also told Nub News: "Evidence produced by the Belton and Manthorpe Parish Council does demonstrate that a small number of motorists do exceed the speed limit.

"Various factors contribute to accidents and I look forward to any recommendations to the junction at Belton that the Road Safety Partnership may assist in reducing accidents."
