'Retro' cafe-bar opens on Grantham's Westgate

By The Editor 6th Jul 2020

A new bar has opened in Grantham's Westgate.

Owner Lee Doherty wants the place aimed at the 'older clientele' offering music from the 70s, 80s and 90s.

The premises, close to Market Square, previously contained the Niche Bar.

Lee, from Lincoln, is a former deejay, who has ran several pubs including the Plough at Skellingthorpe and the White Hart Hotel, Lincoln.

The 43-year-old said of his new venue: "I saw the building was extremely cheap to rent. It was full-equipped. I thought I would give it ago."

He also told Nub News: "I want to go for the older clientele. Rather than youngsters and bang, bang, bang music, I want music from the 70s, 80s and 90s."

Lee, who lives in Lincoln, will be running the venue with wife Stacey, 29.

They are also looking to take on some staff.

The couple acquired the premises on March 26 and originally planned to open a few weeks later.

Their first day was Saturday July 4, which was the day the pubs and bars were allowed to re-open.

The pandemic and related restrictions means the tables inside are spaced out more, cutting the capacity in half, and customers having to sign in.

Lee said of the first night: "It was all right, though it could have been busier."

Hours are yet to be finalised but for now, the Retro Bar will be opening during the evenings of Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The venue also promises to be a cafe with tea, coffee, breakfasts, burgers, pizza, pie and chips.

Daytime hours have also to be settled but Lee said the venue should be open from Wednesday.

He added: "We are not expensive as we are free of ties (to breweries). We will also be doing live music when allowed and maybe open mike nights. If there's a call for real ale, we will do that as well."
