Four council flats to be used as 'emergency accommodation' are to be created on the edge of Grantham town centre.

Members of the Planning Committee of South Kesteven District council overwhelmingly backed the move at a meeting this afternoon.

As reported previously by Nub News, the building they will be sited in at New Lodge, Riverside Walk, was previously the home of the GravityFM radio station.

Members agreed with council planning staff to agree to the application from SKDC itself to convert the use of the building and demolish nearby garages as part of the scheme.

Coun Robert Reid commented: "These flats will be used as emergency accommodation. It's a facility we are desperately short of and really do need."

Other members noted the pleasant riverside location of the site, with Coun Jacky Smith, the council's chairman, saying there were kingfishers in the area.
