Six weapons have been handed into Grantham Police Station during a Lincolnshire-wide firearms surrender.

One was a shotgun, one was an air pistol and four others were rifles.

Officers have confirmed that five of the weapons were given up to the Swingbridge Road station on August 4 and another previously on August 3.

They are part of a 63-firearms haul which included four air pistols, 44 rifles and 15 shotguns, all surrendered between July 20 and August 4.

Detective Inspector Mark Seage said: "We had a selection of weapons handed in during the two-week surrender; these included fully functional weapons through to imitation weapons. Imitation weapons in the wrong hands can cause as much fear as live weapons.

"We are delighted that residents have supported our campaign and handed in these weapons which will prevent them from getting into the wrong hands. I would like to thank all of the staff, and residents, who participated in this campaign for their support."

Lincolnshire Police urged residents to give up their guns by taking part in the national campaign organised by the National Ballistics Intelligence Service (NABIS).

It aimed to reduce to volume of illegally held firearms in the UK to prevent them falling into the wrong hands.

Some of the firearms will now be destroyed but some – like war memorabilia – may be retained by NABIS or museums if they are of significant interest or unusual. Any which can be proved to be linked to a crime will be kept as evidence and retained for any future proceedings.
