A popular back street Grantham boozer noted for beer festivals is staging one with a difference.

Landlord John Senior of the Lord Harrowby says he normally hosts a beer festival in May but that was unable to happen due to the pandemic.

Sadly, Grantham Campaign for Real Ale and St Wulfram's Church were also forced to cancel their annual beer festival due next month.

John told Nub News: "I thought about having a beer from the wood festival, which would be unique to Grantham. I thought about September, which would still have good weather though it would get dark a little earlier."

The festival at 65 Dudley Road will feature nine beers, ranging from a 9.7 per cent barley wine to a 3.8 per cent bitter.

John continued: "It's been hard getting barrels from the breweries due to the Covid situation. They are not up to full production. they were reticent to let us have it in wooden barrels."

But what about taste?

John added: "The wood infuses flavour into the beer. Metal barrels can be a bit sterile. With wood, it gets more flavour. Think of it like a whisky. When they put whisky into a barrel, it takes years for the flavour to develop, but with beer this is quicker. It makes the taste more rounded and softer, especially with a dark beer."

The event starts tomorrow (Thursday) at 3pm, and runs from 12-noon on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Social distancing rules will be followed and restrictions on numbers may apply.
