The driver of a Ferrari who was fined for doing 57mph in a 50-zone near Grantham has further confirmed the A1 as being one of the worst spots in the country to be fined for speeding.

Lincolnshire Live and The Daily Mirror have reported the figures after Stuart Shields challenged a £100 fine.

His case was rejected by Lincolnshire Magistrates Court and instead, he was fined £220, given three points on his licence, and ordered to pay £620 court costs and a £34 victims of crime surcharge.

Shields told the court he accepted doing 57mph on June 26 last year at 8.15am at Great Ponton, where there were roadworks.

But he claimed a lack of warning signs, which was disputed by the court who produced an expert saying otherwise.

As part of his court appearance, Shields who lives in Chelmsford, Essex, submitted a Freedom of Information Act.

It showed he was among 9,091 people caught speeding at the same location in June 2020, which he said meant it was Britain's most profitable speed camera.

He discovered that 8,999 of the drivers caught were travelling at 50-70mph and 92 were going even faster.

He added that the number of drivers caught at the same spot in June this year had fallen to 2,378, of which 2,347 were doing 50-70mph, with 31 exceeding 70mph.

Earlier this year, Nub News revealed how from April 2020 to March 31 2021 that 62,115 motorist have been caught speeding on the Grantham by-pass where there are roadworks concerning the construction of the Grantham Southern Relief Road.

That figure came in a question from Grantham County Councillor Ray Wootten, who received the answer from Lincolnshire County Highways officials.

This compared with 52, 721 fines given out in the same period across the whole of Lincolnshire during the same period Coun Wootten was told.

It meant that roadworks on the A1 near Grantham are delivering more than half the speeding fines in the whole of the county!
