A Grantham business has received planning approval for a storage unit and storage shed at its premises at the south end of town.

Scb Specialised Chemicals Ltd of 1 Tollemache Road South can expand its existing premises from 1125m2 to 1801m2. The extension will also include parking for ten cars.

The application to South Kesteven District Council says the company is a leader in aerosol contract packaging. Their services range from initial product formulation and testing through aerosol filling, packaging and distribution.

Established in 1973, it initially supplied industrial products to factories and councils. The company, which has 25 staff, now solely manufactures aerosol products from its purpose-built factory on Tollemache Road South, Grantham.

The application said: "As the business has expanded the demands of the site have altered. This proposal seeks to provide more storage within the site, meeting the demands of the business, whilst utilising the space on site efficiently. This expansion will help aid business development, improve Health & Safety and aid job retention.

"The proposed building will be used for the storage of chemicals associated with the existing business and the storage unit would be used for the housing of empty drums and pallets. This would improve the safety of workers on site. This would be inline with the B1/B2 use on site and therefore compliant with the requirements of the local plan and recommendations of National Planning Policy."

The application continued: "The proposal would include the erection of a warehouse covering a footprint of 479sqm and a storage unit covering a footprint of 267sqm...these buildings have been carefully positioned and designed to ensure they work well with processes on site and do not provide any detrimental impact on their surroundings."

A report by SKDC planning staff said no letters of representation were received by the council following public consultation.

The proposed development is related to an established commercial use and the site is located directly adjacent to land identified as part of Grantham's Southern Quadrant.

"The development would enhance and improve the management and operations of the site thus contributing positively to the economic growth of the rural area," it continued.

"In terms of scale and design, it is considered that both the 479sq m warehouse building and smaller storage unit, would both be in keeping with the current use of the site and surrounding area, which comprises a variety of businesses uses and associated commercial buildings. Having regard to the established use of the site, is not considered to be likely to lead to a significant adverse impact on the character of the area."

Recommending approval, the report added the development would not harm the amenity of neighbouring premises, or harm the character of the area, but would "enhance the operations of the existing business and would be in accordance with relevant provisions of the Local Plan Policies."
