A fundraising appeal has been launched to plant a commemorative orchard in a new and valuable public space in Grantham.

Wyndham Park Forum is appealing to the public to help raise funds for what it promises will be 'an amazing community facility' - a 'Heroes Orchard' close to Wyndham Park to commemorate the district's rich aviation history.

The orchard appeal outlines plans for a living tribute to British forces and their wartime allies, continuing the aviation heritage work done in recent years by South Kesteven District Council.

The Forum plans to plant 75 trees to mark the 75th anniversary of Grantham and the district's role in D-Day and Arnhem plus the 2020 commemoration of Victory in Europe and is seeking to raise £12,500 for heritage fruit trees, new fencing and interpretation boards.

Schools will be able to use the site as a nature and educational resource and it will offer opportunities to increase the Wyndham Park volunteer pool of 60/80 people and widen available activities.

The appeal is via a new CrowdfundSK project launched by SKDC, which has teamed up with national crowdfunding platform Spacehive to open funding opportunities for groups across the district

Anyone can pledge, with a minimum of £2. The appeal closes on 8 February 2020 and no pledges will be redeemed until the final total has been reached.

Wyndham Park Forum Chairman, John Knowles said: "We are delighted to have the opportunity to create something really special for the future.

"Anyone pledging is investing in an amazing facility which will mean a huge amount to an awful lot of people.

"The park has deep military significance through historic links with the Machine Gun Corps and our First World War Memorial Park status and the idea of an adjoining aviation commemoration seems very appropriate. It will be an amazing community facility."
